Today’s Way is Take Breaks. In the book, I show you that taking breaks is essential for best brain performance. If you just work and work without stopping, your brain starts to function less well and what you’ve just learnt doesn’t get a chance to be processed appropriately. But there’s also when to take a break and what are the best things to do in that break.

Today’s actions:

  1. Every hour (approximately) stop and do something different for a few minutes. It doesn’t matter what, just different in as many ways as possible from what you’ve been doing.
  2. In your lunch break, do as many of the following as you can – and note that some of them combine so I’m not really asking you to do lots of things!
    • Put your work completely away or leave the room where it is
    • Have a change of scene – our brain is refreshed by change
    • Get your body moving – unless your work involves moving, in which case rest your body for at least 20 minutes
    • Be quiet – go somewhere where no one will talk to you for a while. You can just sit and look at the clouds, or read a book, do some stretches, go for a short walk
    • Focus on your breathing for several minutes – breathing slightly deeper and slower, and sense your body relax and soften

Notice how your brain works so much better when you return to your work.

Have a good weekend!

  1. So many young people sit and revise for hours at a time and I’m constantly telling them to take breaks. I think they feel guilty for stopping but it’s so important. I try to have a break over lunch most days.

  2. Great tips ! I often suggest having a break and just going out and getting some fresh air and looking at some different colours or listening to the noises / sounds

I encourage the breathing exercises , young people often feel “it’s weird “ but at my school nurse drop-in I try and actually practice a short breathing exercise with them ! They often want a “quick fix “ but I explain it takes time , even for adults !

  3. And the winners are – actually SIX of you because there were six valid entries so it would be mean and silly only to give a book to five of you! – Karen Park, Eve Sharp, “C”, Jane Welby, Christine Cox and Lynn. Thank you for entering! I will email you all in the next few days and get your addresses and signing instructions.

The reason there were not many entries was because someone had – meaning well but …. – done their own giveaway for one of my other books and asked people to follow and tweet me on Twitter, so my timeline was flooded for days on end and I couldn’t get my own messaging out! But I’m happy because I always hate the bit where I have to tell people they weren’t lucky enough to win…

Do comment but please remember that this site is for all ages.
