This afternoon I’m heading to Birmingham to do a keynote speech at the SLA/YLG (School Library Association/Youth Librarians Group) conference. This is a highlight of the year for children’s authors because we do love a gaggle of school and youth librarians more than almost* anything. (To be completely honest, I might marginally have to give precedence to lying in a hammock under a shady tree on a hot summer’s day, sipping icey champagne while reading a book.)
I have done the foolish thing I so often do: when asked, months ago, to come up with a title and blurb for my talk, I came up with something which I inevitably regretted when preparing the actual talk.
Stress and Teenage Brains – How to Calm the Perfect Storm in Your Library
Nicola Morgan is not only The Teenage Brain Woman and expert on adolescent wellbeing in the modern
online world, she’s also a passionate expert on reading for pleasure and the creator of readaxation. With
her latest books, Positively Teenage and The Teenage Guide to Life Online, and her next one, Body
Brilliant, which focuses on body image and identity, she’s perfectly placed to show school librarians how
they can provide that calm, inspiring space in the eye of a perfect storm, and why that’s so necessary to
student success, ambition and health. Your own state of Zenlike wisdom beckons!
Oh, for goodness’ sake! When will I learn?
Anyway, that’s what I’m doing. Apparently.
Here are some links to relevant resources to sparklify my talk
- Essential general handout – please DO read this: #1General event handout. It also has a link to my slideshare page where you will find my Powerpoint presentation.
- A very useful post on boosting reading for pleasure amongst students: www.nicolamorgan.com/event-highlights/when-a-reading-for-pleasure-strategy-has-instant-success/
- All my resources on reading for pleasure in one place: www.nicolamorgan.com/core-resource-the-reading-brain/
- This is a useful package of resources for schools about reading for pleasure: ReadingFolder (It includes the postcard on the right about the appalling danger of reading; I will also have some printed ones with me)
A frabjus discount code:
If you use the code LIB25 by July 19th 2019, you will get 25% off my teaching materials, Brain Sticks and Stress Well for Schools. Anyone who buys a Brain Stick always receives lovely posters and postcards and occasionally a free book.
******I will send a free copy of Body Brilliant (publishing on July 11th) to the first three schools to order a Brain Stick*******
ALSO, let’s have a PICK ME competition now, shall we?
Add a pick me comment below and I will pick three randomly on July 11th (by random number generator) to receive a free signed copy sent to any UK address. Saying something really nice to me won’t make any difference to the outcome (unless you believe in karma) but it will make me happy anyway!
[EDITED TO ADD: WINNERS ARE 7, 5 and 6: Abbi, Karen and Hannah. Congratulations! Commiserations to everyone else – better luck next time!)
Can’t wait to see all you lovely librarians. I’m afraid it’s a very brief visit, as I have to rush away to catch a train. So, if you want any of the massive array of pretty postcards and posters I’ll have with me, grab me quickly. Oh, and MUGS! And BAGS. Check out the Hachette stand, where there’ll be lots of stuff, too.
