Healthy Screen Habits – Introduction

With regret and for reasons outside my control, I have had to cancel my planned webinar, Teens and Screens, which was due to happen on August 18th. (Everyone has been given a refund and an apology.) But I am going to more than make it up to you! First, I’m going to create a free three-part series of blogposts. A mini-course – and completely free for a limited time. Second, I will either reschedule the webinar for October or, more likely, record a talk and make it available to view via my shop.

HEALTHY SCREEN HABITS – the mini-course

You can access all this completely free at least until the end of September. After that I will probably remove it and add it as course material for the recording or webinar.

Who is it for?

Parents, carers, other relatives, teachers and any professionals working with young people or in education in any way; anyone else interested! Young people are also welcome to read everything though it will be pitched at adults.

Part 1 – Behind the screen

Don’t miss this, or you will not properly be empowered!

I will talk about:

  • Different screens, different pros and cons
  • Different users, different pros and cons
  • Different uses, different pros and cons
  • Be healthily suspicious of media headlines
  • What we need to worry about – and what we don’t
  • WHY screens are so compelling and what we mean when we say they’re addictive

Part 2 – Harnessing psychology

I will talk about:

  • Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
  • Teenage brain factors – the weak prefrontal cortex and the powerful social drive; risk-taking and peer pressure
  • Why addiction psychology helps us here
  • Thinking about the different ages and personalities of your family members
  • Why this has to be a family commitment and your example counts
  • What brain bandwidth and the failure of multi-tasking tell us about healthy screen use

Part 3 – Build positive habits for life

I will:

  • Suggest strategies and show you how to work out which ones to try on your family and household
  • Offer case studies
  • Answer all the common questions I get

You will also receive a large bundle of handouts and resources to help you understand everything about building healthy screen habits for you and your family. This will be downloadable from the last post of the course.

You don’t have to do anything other than remember to come back and read what I have to say, but:
