Every week is Children’s Mental Health Week for me. And everyone who knows my work knows that there are two sides to my work for young people and their mental health:
- Helping young people
- Helping young people by helping adults understand young people
My books are directly for young people (though often pinched by adults) but I do a lot of work aimed directly at adults: parents, teachers and any adult who’ll listen. And I’m all about understanding because I know that when we properly understand something, we can act effectively. When we don’t understand, we flail about, waiting for other people to tell us what to do and often following the wrong advice.
So when someone asks me, “What should I do about my teenagers when they…?” I answer by saying, “Here’s what could be going on in your teenager’s mind; here’s what happens when such things go on in a mind and here’s why,” and suddenly the adult sees what to do, or what to try, or that there’s nothing they can do except love their teenager and wait.
I do also offer strategies but the understanding is the most important part!
A Parent Guide for HappySelf Journal
I have been commissioned by HappySelf Journal to write some useful articles for parents and the first one is Ten Things You Need to Know About Teenagers.
