From me, for you – to all the schools I visit

I wrote this for a school I visited recently but it’s really for every school I visit, every young person I talk to, everyone who reads or listens to anything I write or say. This week, though, special shout-outs for Pipers Corner School in Buckinghamshire and Bedford Modern School. I’m looking forward to spending time with you!

Go Bravely Through the World, by Nicola Morgan

Go bravely through the world:

Your life has been given only to you

And it is yours, yours for living.

Your brain has been given only to you

And it is yours, yours for growing.

When things feel too difficult, too dark,

Too steep, too scary, too far,

Take one deep breath, then another and another;

Step forward boldly, trusting that with your new knowledge

And determination and heart,

You can go further than you think,

Do more than you imagined at the start,

Achieve more than seems possible.

Every life begins with one breath,

Every journey with one small step,

Every talent with one try and try and try again.

So learn to fail, learn to fall

And learn to pick yourself up

And breathe and smile and climb back up the ladder

To try, try, try again –

And one day to succeed.

You can have your “brain in your hands”

And make it FLOURISH.

Your brain, your life, your dreams:

Live them well, now you know how.

Go bravely through the world:

Your life has been given only to you

And it is yours, yours for living.

Your brain has been given only to you

And it is yours, yours for growing.

Now you know how.

How schools can help prevent helicopter parenting
