"We’re all synaesthetes up to a point." Well, I have been saying this for years, and doing talks about it in schools. But eventually the scientists get there. Click here.
Welcome to my brain website
I am the author of Blame My Brain and Know Your Brain - written for young people, parents and schools. This website is a resource for teachers or parents who want to know more about brains. But you don’t have to be a teacher or a parent - anyone with a brain is welcome.
You will find information, news from well-respected sources, recommended books, websites and suggested activities. You can buy books through Amazon or email me. And at the bottom of this page, there’s a short video gving you an idea of what I do.
You can even eat cake! Brain CakeTM was first featured in Know your Brain and is quite possibly the healthiest cake in the world (as well as being delicious, of course). I don’t promise that it will make you cleverer but the range of nutrients and slow-release energy it provides are designed to fuel your brain and body efficiently. It’s packed with whatever fruit, nuts and seeds you like; it has less added sugar than a normal cake and you can use wholemeal flour and extra omega oils, if you want. (Frankly, I don’t - it’s good enough already). Some of the ingredients are believed by some people to be especially useful for brains, but the research is by no means proven - though they are healthy foods anyway, and wouldn’t have a negative effect. And in case you are worried: I used to be a professional cook. Further down the page, I planned that you would find a video demonstrating how to make it. However, I quickly discovered that although I can cook, I am no Delia Smith when it comes to being filmed cooking so I scrapped that idea after two days and five cakes. I decided just to give you the recipe. (You’ll find it by clicking on the Know Your Brain book cover on this page. Or, buy the book, if you are a kind person).
But, if you really want a video, I’d hate to disappoint you. So, (see below) my film-making daughter has put together a film of me doing the things that full-time writers do, most of which do not involve writing. You’ll even see some cake-making bits that weren’t too embarrassing.
On the Brainy Tips page, there is advice for all of us, young and less young, to help our brains flourish, based on well-established knowledge and understanding. (If something is a based on guesswork or unsubstantiated research, I say so).

Please look around and find out what’s going on inside my brain and yours.
But first, the video - see what my life looks like and count the different pairs of boots I wear. Please note: much of the quality of my daughter’s excellent film was lost when she reduced the size and format for Youtube. Also, if your download speed is slow (or if you are viewing at a busy time of day) you may find it keeps stopping; if this happens, I suggest you click pause and wait for it to download fully (the pale pink bar crosses over to the right) before watching. Enjoy!
